1. Keep It Dense

Dense, interwoven branches provide a safe nesting place for small birds, whilst open hedges tend to attract larger animals such as squirrels and magpies. We recommend using holly as it forms dense bushes that provide excellent protection during the winter.

2. Time Your Cuts

Hedge cutting should be left until late winter as the berries and other fruits that grow on hedgerows provide vital food for birds. The earlier you cut your hedge, the less food will be available to help wildlife survive through the most hostile time of year. Never cut during the bird breeding season from March to August for safety reasons.

3. Don’t Overcut

Although cutting is necessary for hedge maintenance, cutting them back to the same point yearly will result in fewer flowers or berries. Instead, our tree surgeons recommend cutting them every two to three years or letting the hedge grow out a little. Another alternative is to cut just one side or the top each year.

4. Encourage Native Shrubs

Naturally occurring British shrubs provide habitat and food for more insects and other animals than those introduced from abroad. If you can, we suggest including various species in your Farnham garden, which will provide food throughout the year.

5. Rejuvenate Your Hedge

Cutting your hedges occasionally will allow them to remain bushy for some time, but eventually, they will become open at the base. To prevent deterioration and the need for hedge removal, they need to be cut down close to ground level so they can send up a crop of new stems and begin a fresh cycle of healthy growth.
